Obama couldn't carry Bush's Socks

     This lineup of Democratic presidential candidates is getting more bizarre by the moment.
     Now, Barack Obama says President George Bush has been an empty shell in the White House over the past six years. To wit: Obama said:
     "This president may occupy the White House, but for the last six years the position of leader of the free world has remained open. And it is time to fill that role once more.”
     In essence, Obama is saying that he will soon step into "W's" shoes to do a better job.
     For Obama to compare himself to George Bush is like Anna Nicole Smith comparing herself to Marilyn Monroe. One had true class, personal style and an innate, genetic talent for their profession. The second was a small-time, inexperienced, often pitiful, puppet created by the mainstream media.
     World vision and great leadership is not something you can buy down at Walmart. It grows out of deep intellect, personal heritage and a clear understanding of the human heart and spirit. I don't sense any robustness of heart, mind and spirit when I hear Obama speak.
     What the hell has he ever done?
     Got himself elected senator in an all-black suburb of Chicago? Even in Congress, what's he done? I don't know of a single piece of Obama Legislation which has gained major attention. Basically what he has done is make himself the darling of the liberal media because he is black, stylish, well-spoken and good-looking.
     In the event of a world crisis, "W" can consult with his father instantly and draw upon one of the greatest political minds of the 20th century. I'm sure than John Quincy Adams, our nation's sixth president and son of John Adams, the second president, had a similar relationship with his father.
     At least Hillary, if elected, could consult with her husband to make some informed political choices.
     And Edwards... Who would he turn to in a moment of national crisis?
     Probably God... That's about his speed....
     But Obama...who would he call on? His speechwriters? His PR guy? His tailor? His make-up man? His wife? Howard Dean? Al Sharpton? Nancy Pelosi? Maybe... like Edwards, he'd probably call on God too.
     In boxing, there is a saying that promoters use when differentiating between a true boxer and a contender. In pointing out the difference, they say the contender is not qualified to carry the personal equipment of the other boxer into the ring. The exact quote is: "He couldn't carry his socks."
     Barack Obama can't carry George W. Bush's socks.

 

 

In Memory of Eddie Robinson...

           Lots of black folks have made contributions toward advancing the lives of other colored people. Among the most widely-known are Frederick Douglas, W.E.B Dubois and Martin Luther King. In my opinion, the late Eddie Robinson, football coach at Gambling for 57 years, should be right up there among them. Robinson didn't do it with writing, fiery speeches or philosophizing, he did it by developing young black athletes into national heroes who made every black person who saw these athletes on the gridiron proud to be an Afro-American.      
        In the sixties, seventies and eighties, every time a black player was up for grabs in the NFL draft, nine times out of ten he was from Grambling, a small black college in Ruston, LA. The attraction for aspiring black athletes at Grambling was not the college. The attraction was Eddie Gay Robinson, the son of a sharecropper and a football genius who not only knew how to identify and develop great football talent, but could teach the social mentality, the set of acceptable behaviour and the personal mindset that turned young black athletes into role models for other young black men. Most of all, he showed the world that young black men, with the proper cultivation and guidance, could be just as successful as young white men.    
       Over the course of those 57 years, he produced more than 200 players who would leave Grambling and go to bigger, better things in the National Football League. No other college coach has even come close to that record. Not "Bear" Bryant, Bobby Bowdon, Joe Paterno, Bob Devaney, "Woody" Hayes....  Nobody.
       Let's examine the list: There were four NFL Hall of Famers: Charlie Joiner, Buck Buchanan, Willie Davis and Willie Brown. The list includes many of the greatest players to ever step on a gridiron. There was Paul "Tank" Younger, the first player from a historically black college. Then there was MVP quarterback Doug Williams, James Harris, Ernie Ladd, Sammy White, Cliff McNeil, Roosevelt Taylor and Willie Williams. These are only 12 recognizable "big-name" players who got their training under Robinson.  Just think, there were more than 180 others.
       Absolutely amazing!!    
       In 1992, Robinson was the first black coach to win the Bobby Dodd award.
       In accepting the award, Robinson noted: "Martin Luther King Jr. said he had been to the top of the mountain. Well, I've been to the top of the mountain in my profession."        
       Truer words were never spoken.
       History won't remember Eddie Robinson in the same light as Douglas, Dubois and King, but, in his own way, he made an incredible contribution to the advancement of colored people and their integration into the global melting pot.
       Eddie Robinson.... What a great man!
